British Immigration System Types of Visas BISV
The British Immigration System Types of Visas (BISV) categorizes visas into different types according to the nature of the travel to the United Kingdom. There are six types of visas available under the British Immigration System which are:
1. Standard Visitor Visa (SVV)
The Standard Visitor Visa (SVV) is for individuals who wish to travel to the UK for a short period of time, typically for a business meeting, visiting family or for tourism purposes. This Visa allows the holder to stay in the UK for up to six months after which they must leave the UK or request an extension. Applicants must show evidence of their intent to leave the UK at the end of their stay, and must have enough funds to support themselves during their stay in the UK.
2. Student Visa (SV)
The Student Visa (SV) is for individuals who wish to travel to the UK to study. This visa is ideal for individuals who are keen on studying in the UK at any level of education, from primary school to university. To apply for a student visa, applicants must show evidence of their acceptance into a UK based educational institution, their capacity to support themselves and evidence of English language proficiency. With a student visa, students are allowed to work part-time while studying to support themselves financially.
3. Skilled Worker Visa (SWV)
The Skilled Worker Visa (SWV) is for individuals who have been offered a job by a UK-based employer. It replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa in December 2020. With this visa, applicants are allowed to work in the UK in a full-time capacity, make use of public funds, and extend their stay in the UK beyond an initial period of five years.
4. Family and Partner Visa (FPV)
The Family and Partner Visa (FPV) is designed for individuals who wish to join their family or partners who are already in the UK. This visa is suitable for individuals who would like to join their spouses, civil partners, or partners who live in the UK. To qualify for this visa, applicants must show evidence of their relationship status, accommodation, and financial support whilst in the UK. Family members and dependents on this visa are eligible to work in the UK.
5. Business Visa (BV)
The Business Visa (BV) is for individuals who wish to visit the UK for business purposes. This visa is ideal for individuals who would like to attend conferences, negotiations or meetings. To qualify for this visa, applicants must provide evidence of their business purpose in the UK and their intent to leave once their business is complete. This visa allows the holder to stay in the UK for up to six months.
6. Transit Visa (TV)
The Transit Visa (TV) is for individuals who are in transit through the UK to another destination. This visa is ideal for individuals who would like to transit through the UK to another country. This type of visa is usually valid for up to 48 hours and does not allow the holder to work or study in the UK. Applicants are advised to check if they need a Transit Visa, as nationals of some countries can transit without a visa.
