Introduction

Before heading to China, citizens of the United Kingdom must apply for a visa, also known as an entry permit. The Chinese visa application process may seem like a tedious task, but it is quickly simplified with preparedness and organization. The following guide will assist you in obtaining an F Visa, which allows applicants to visit for non-commercial purposes such as attending seminars, cultural exchanges, study tours, or visiting friends and family.

Visa Eligibility

The F Visa applies to individuals who plan to stay in China for no more than 6 months. However, a visa extension may be requested through the Public Security Bureau if further stay in China is needed. Citizens who plan to perform commercial activities, such as receiving payment for work, must apply for a different visa type.

Documents Requirement

In order to submit your application correctly, ensure your visa application package contains the following documents:

Current and signed passport with at least six months validity left before expiration and a blank visa page for the visa sticker

Completed Chinese Visa Application Form with signature and a recent color passport-sized photo affixed to the form

A travel itinerary and invitation letter from the host in China, such as a university or a friend

Proof of financial means such as bank statements, cash, or credit cards

Depending on the visa’s duration, proof of an onward or return ticket

Process and Fees

You can submit your visa application in person to the Chinese Visa Application Centre (CVASC) or send it through a visa agency. The current visa fee for an F Visa is ￡151, and the CVASC may also charge an additional service fee. Note that processing time and fees may change, so double-check with the CVASC.

If you submit the application in person, the normal processing time is four working days. If you request an express service, your visa will be processed within two to three working days with an additional fee. A rush service in one working day is available in emergencies with an extra rush fee.

Additional Information

It is important to keep in mind the following:

Visa validity dates—Do not enter China before the “Enter Before” date on your visa sticker. Once in China, the “Duration of Each Stay” starts. Leave China before it expires.

Registration—Foreign nationals staying in China for more than 24 hours are required to register with the local public security bureau or the hotels at which they stay, within 24 hours of arrival.

Laws and regulations—Foreigners must comply with China's laws and regulations. Chinese visas do not give a waiver of these laws and regulations.
