12 Types of U.S. Visas and Their Eligibility Requirements

Visiting the United States requires a valid visa, unless you are a citizen of one of the 39 countries in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). There are twelve types of visas for nonimmigrant visitors to the U.S., each with its own set of eligibility requirements.

1. B-1 Visa:

4. J-1 Visa:

The J-1 visa is for visitors participating in exchange programs, such as students, teachers, and researchers. Eligible individuals must have a sponsor organization that meets the requirements specified by the U.S. Department of State.

5. M-1 Visa:

The M-1 visa is for vocational or technical students seeking to pursue a course of study that is not academic in nature. Eligible students must be enrolled in a SEVP-certified school that offers vocational or technical training.

6. H-1B Visa:

The H-1B visa is for foreign professionals who have been offered employment by a U.S. employer in specialty occupations that require a bachelor’s degree or higher. Eligible individuals must have the necessary qualifications for the job.

7. L-1 Visa:

The L-1 visa is for intra-company transferees who are transferring to a U.S. branch, subsidiary, or affiliate of their current employer. Eligible individuals must have been employed by the foreign company for at least one year in a managerial, executive, or specialized knowledge capacity.

8. O-1 Visa:

9. P-1 Visa:

The E-1 visa is for treaty traders conducting international trade between the U.S. and their home country. Eligible individuals must be a citizen of a country that has a qualifying treaty with the U.S.

11. E-2 Visa:

The E-2 visa is for treaty investors who are investing in a U.S. business or enterprise. Eligible individuals must be a citizen of a country that has a qualifying treaty with the U.S. and must have made a substantial investment in a U.S. business or enterprise.

12. K-1 Visa:

The K-1 visa is for fiancés or fiancées of U.S. citizens who are coming to the U.S. to marry. Eligible individuals must have met in person within the past two years and have a bona fide relationship with the U.S. citizen.
